Like most 30-somethings who grew up with cable, my childhood is filled with vivid memories of episodes of Zoobilee Zoo, Pete & Pete and the whole TGIF lineup. But you know what I also remember? MTV’s The Grind. I can remember being mesmerized by strangers dancing up on each other to club music in bikinis and overalls on a beach or a manufactured warehouse party scene and thinking: I CAN’T WAIT TO BE 18! I also grew up with a mom who has an excellent taste in music and has always believed in “housecleaning jam sessions” and let me dig through her music mix cassettes - all labeled and neatly housed in a faux woodgrain box…if you don’t know the ones I’m talking about, this mix probably isn’t for you.
When I started putting together a 90s mix to share, I nearly had 100 songs and was having anxiety over how to order them and then I realized that so many genres of the 90s touch my soul. But the feeling that I get with club, dance and house is on a whole other level - it’s what always gets me up and puts me in a good mood no matter what. Maybe it’s because this music reminds me of good times or maybe in my past life, I was a euro club kid with a cool accent? Either way, HAPPY FRIDAY, Y’ALL!
(P.S. I’ve got at least 3 more playlists queued up so stay tuned for more dance parties)
