Did “having a couple of friends over” suddenly turn into the biggest soiree on the block? I’ve been there and I’m the queen of putting together a game-winning theme before the 4th quarter buzzer sounds. Check out these 3 easy NYE party ideas that you can pull off before the ball drops!
1.) A Pantone Color of the Year Celebration
Ever since Pantone announced Living Coral as 2019’s Color of the Year, the orangey-pinkey hue has been popping up everywhere - even on the shell of my new iPhone! On the eve of eve, you should have no problem hunting down coral but if you’re not exactly finding enough to deck out your spot from floor-to-ceiling, you can incorporate colors from the past few years for a total rainbow party but keeping Living Coral as the star of the show!
One of the easiest ways to highlight the hue in your party decor, is to head to your nearest Party City to either grab a ton of balloons or crepe paper to create streamers throughout your party area and while you’re there, check for their Pantone partyware. If you’re near an art or paint store that has sample color cards, see if you can snag a few to create a colorful snack/dessert table or Google some shade images and print to create labels, etc.
What to serve: Go for light snacks/desserts in bright colors on clear platters to create a colorful serving tablescape - think olives for green, small cheddar cheese cubes for yellow and a plate of pepperoni for red. For sweets, grab some M&Ms or fruits like pineapples and strawberries that can be separated by colors .
2.) An All White Affair
NYE is usually all about silver, gold and black. But why not pretend Labor Day never hit and party like you’re Diddy and your house is in the Hamptons this year?! Deck out your place in all white party decor - again, head to Party City and head down the color-coded aisles and go nuts in the white section, adding in pops of silver. You can either go for a Miami Beach summertime feel or for a “we’re trapped in an igloo and need to cozy up together” feel! For a punch of modern fun straight from Martha Stewart Magazine, head to a craft store like Michaels and look for number stickers in white or even silver and apply to champagne glasses to hand out and toast when it’s countdown time!
What to serve: If you’re going for a beachier vibe, serve some light and airy appetizers (think grilled mini Hawaiian kabobs and mini cold salad cups, etc). If you’re theme is more winter, choose comfort foods like marinated meatballs, mac n cheese cups and/or sliders — and have a Tide Pen handy!
3.) A Disco Party
You’re probably just as surprised as I am that I didn’t put this first because Disco parties are my absolute FAVORITE…see below for shameless examples from Eddie and I’s 2016 going away party that we held at Disco in River North:
Disco is extremely simple to pull off, thanks to the ease and tackiness of the 70’s. Disco is colorful and shiny and if you can grasp those 2 things, you’re good to go! If you’re guests have lived under a rock and are unsure of what to wear, simply send them YouTube videos of That 70’s Shows or screenshots of Studio 54 VIPs like Cher, Diana Ross and Elton John. Decorate very simply by making a disco ball the main attraction, sprinkle in silver or gold confetti pieces and make sure you have a STELLAR playlist (hint: If Donna Summer, Sister Sledge and ABBA aren’t on it, you’re doing something wrong). Add in a silver or gold foil fringe backdrop so your partygoers can catch those 70’s outfits on camera and make sure there is a champagne tower continuously flowing.
What to serve: Go for fun and quirky retro bites like this pimento cheese ball, mini Jell-O cups and a frothy punchbowl!
No matter what you decide to do, just have fun - don’t stress about getting the shrimp cocktail sauce just right or if you should have invited that one neighbor that helped you carry in groceries 2 months ago. Bring in the new year on your own accord, surrounded by the people that you love and bring positivity to your life - and the ones that know how to party when they hear Prince’s 1999 come through the speakers!
Wishing you lots of love and party in 2019,
